What if…?

With no time to waste and no restraints on creativity, we jumped at the chance and pushed the boat out, turning to one of our long-term architectural design collaborators, Mark Homer, for help with the site planning and 3D renders.

We dived into a world of boats in all their shapes, sizes and levels of luxury, reflecting the nature and variety of vessels the marina would cater for. We researched the graphic language of charts and came across nautical flags, which immediately stood out as a strong starting point for creating the visual identity.

We quickly realised that it wasn’t just the visuals but the tender itself needed to sell Richard’s vision. We considered how to augment his figures and detailed plans with something no other applicant considered, making his tender unique.

Richard has been a sailor all his life. He trained as a boat builder not far from our Dorset office. He now lives in Kefalonia, where he has become keenly aware of human impact on marine environments. Knowing this, we put forward an idea. What if the marina took some of its projected profits and set up a Trust? The aims of the Trust would be threefold: provide grants and apprenticeships for young people wishing to pursue a career in maritime industries, fund local initiatives to preserve the local Kefalonia maritime environment and provide information and education that would help preserve and protect the fragile marine environments around the island.

We produced a detailed document describing the Trust and its work, outlining ideas for projects, collaborations and events. The tender was well received and recognised as unique in its thinking and approach. Sadly, the project is on hold.

The tender document remains ready for resubmission when the tender process reopens. We hope that one day, there will not only be a marina but also an organisation that protects the marine environments Richard so deeply loves.
